THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA SUMMER MUSIC CONSERVATORY: JUNE 10-16, 2018

Participants study repertoire with USC music faculty in small chamber ensembles and together in a chamber orchestra culminating in a performance on the last day.  Students who have completed 9th through 12th grade focus on individual performance and chamber music, developing musicianship skills – the listening, rhythmic and ensemble skills that go into making chamber music.  In addition to master classes, chamber music coaching and private lessons, students are offered a variety of activities, including courses in music history, music theory, how to prepare for an audition, and jazz improvisation. Conservatory participants rehearse and perform solo works with professional accompanists and hear concerts and recitals given by conservatory faculty members.

FURMAN UNIVERSITY SUMMER MUSIC CAMP: JUNE 10th-15th, 2018

Furman's Band and Orchestra Camp is a unique one-week experience designed to help 260 students, ages 12-18, fuel their musical enthusiasm and boost their playing skills. Talented musicians from across the country come to Furman with expectations of taking their performance skills to the next level. Students are challenged in vigorous daily rehearsals, musicianship classes, and master classes. Students perform in one of four large ensembles (a full symphony orchestra, a string orchestra, and two concert bands) and may audition for a jazz ensemble, various chamber groups, or perform as a soloist on the Honors Solo Recital. The evening recitals and the Friday concert are open to the public. In addition to the ensemble rehearsals, the camp offers classes in basic musicianship, optional private lessons and daily recreational activities, all within the beautiful setting of the Furman University campus.

SEWANEE MUSIC FESTIVAL: JUNE 23rd-JULY 22nd, 2018

The mission of the SSMF is to educate talented young musicians from around the world through close work with faculty mentors, intensive orchestral and chamber music study, and frequent performance. The SSMF fosters an atmosphere of collaboration and inspiration and promotes the belief that all people are elevated through the experience of making and hearing great music together.

The SSMF believes in building great musical lives, and great lives through music. The comprehensive nature of music education at Sewanee is unique. Here teaching does not stop at the studio door. Faculty are a constant presence on campus, rehearsing and working alongside students, attending their performances. Students build confidence on stage, performing weekly in both orchestral and chamber music concerts. Weekly rotation in orchestra and chamber music enables students to learn from every chair, and to understand the value of every role. Through relationships with peers, faculty, conductors and guest artists, our students build their musical skills as they develop their love for music.
