Why Elementary School Counseling?
Elementary school years set the tone for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skill necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners. Through a comprehensive developmental school counseling program, school counselors work as a team with the school staff, parents and the community to create a caring climate and atmosphere. By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, school counselors can help all children achieve academic success.

Why would my child need to see the school counselor?

There are many reasons why students and parents would contact me. I always stress to the students, however, that coming to see me does not mean that they are in "trouble". I have many friends that stop by to see me every day for so many reasons!

Below are the most common referrals for school counseling that I receive from parents, teachers, and students!

Social Skills

Anxiety (this is common at the beginning of the school year)

Peer Relations

Friendship Skills

School Skills (strategies to be successful in the classroom)

Home Life Changes

Academic Concerns/Study Skills

What does the School Counseling Program look like at IES?

I teach classroom guidance and do read alouds, so I will see your child with their class at least once per month. We teach a character education curriculum in my classroom each month and then I travel to each classroom to teach brief lessons on life skills and school success strategies. I see children in individual and small group settings, in addition to large group guidance.

I promise to ALWAYS maintain a confidential atmosphere for my students and parents. The goal is for both students AND parents to be able to trust me, help them solve problems, and be there to provide a listening ear!

Your child may come home one day and say that they got to eat lunch with me, or that we talked and played games together. I want you to know that I am not just there for my students when they have problems. I like to be involved with the happy parts of their lives, too! I promise to always call if there is an issue that I feel you need to be aware of.

We are a TEAM!

Let's keep the communication open to help our little friends learn and grow socially, emotionally and academically!
