READissance:

A Rebirth of Reading

 

First Semester: August 15 – December 16, 2011

Second Semester:  January 3 – May 4, 2012

 

What?  READissance is a reading incentive program that rewards students who read 7 books per semester.  

 

v  Once you read 1 book and complete a form in the Library Media Center, you become a member of the READissance Club.

o     Fiction form

o     Nonfiction form

 

v  Once you read 7 books, you become a VIP member and are invited to participate in a Reading Celebration at school during 4th period.

 

v  When you read over 7 books, you are competing with your class (freshman, sophomores, juniors, or seniors) for a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize with values of $20, $15, and $10.

 

Who?  Any LHS student can participate.  READissance is voluntary and starts over each semester.

 

Where?  The Library Media Center!  When you read a book, bring it by the library media center and complete information on it.  The library media specialist will keep a record of the books you are reading.

 

When?  Start Now!

 

Why?  LHS wants to encourage all students to read on a regular basis for pleasure and information. 

Rules:

 

Ø     Read 1 book per semester to be a member of the READissance Club.

 

Ø     Read 7 books per semester to become a VIP member and get invited to a Reading Celebration during 4th period.

 

Ø     Books may be fiction or nonfiction.

 

Ø     Books must be self-selected and outside reading. A book read by the entire class does not count.

 

Ø     If a teacher gives students classroom credit for selecting a book to read outside of class, this may be counted.

 

Ø     Students are expected to read at their appropriate level and may only use books read during the semester.  Only 2 of the 7 books may be graphic novels or short books.  The library media specialist reserves the right to disqualify a book.

 

Ø     You must sign an honor code statement that you read the book during the current semester.

 

Ø     First semester begins on August 16th. The deadline for reading and writing up each book you read is December 18th. The Reading Celebration for the first semester will be held in January.

 

Ø     Second semester begins on January 4th.  The deadline for reading and writing up each book you read is May 7th.  The Reading Celebration for the second semester will be held in May.

 

Ø     When a student reads over 7 books, he/she is competing within a class (freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors) for a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd prize.  Books beyond the 7 must have a minimum of 200 pages.
