School Improvement Project

At Landrum High School, you may have noticed the lack of plant life – trees, grass, shrubs, flowers, etc.  This is due to several different factors that include human mistakes and nature.  For this project, you are going to create a landscape plan for Landrum High School.  This project will be broken down into several parts beginning with today’s research.

Part 1

Research different plants and discover their growing methods, ideal habitat, growing season, problems associated with the plant, and diseases that may hinder the plant’s growth or kill the plant.  One thing to consider is if the plant is able to be grown and survive in our climate.

Include:

  • 10 Deciduous Trees
  • 5 Coniferous Trees
  • 5 Flowering Trees
  • 15 Shrubs
  • 5 Climbing/Spreading Plants
  • 20 Annual Flowers
  • 20 Perennial Flowers

Create a spreadsheet with the name of the plant and columns for each category of research.  Include all important information.

Part 2

Research different ground cover methods such as different types of mulch and determine which ground cover works best in our climate.  Discover how the ground cover is created, the benefits of the ground cover, the negatives of the ground cover, and how the ground cover improves the landscape as well as helps to retain the topographical features.

Include:

·        5 types of ground cover

Create a spreadsheet with the name of the mulch and columns for each category of research.  Include all important information.
