District One Board Member Elected As South Carolina School Board Association Region 14 Director

Travis Sloan, secretary of the Spartanburg School District One Board of Trustees, was elected as Region 14 Director of the South Carolina School Boards Association (SCSBA) during the association’s annual business meeting Saturday, Dec. 2. Sloan will be completing the last year of a four-year term. Region 14 includes Spartanburg 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 school districts.

The annual business meeting, which was held during the association’s Legislative Advocacy Conference, included voting delegates from most of the state’s 81 school boards. In addition to the election of association officers, delegates adopt resolutions to guide the association during the 2018 legislative session.

Sloan has served on the Spartanburg District One board for 14 years. He is currently serving as secretary and also serves on the policy and procedures committee. He is currently the chairman of the Swofford Career Center Liaison Board.

In addition to his work on the Spartanburg One board, he is deeply committed to serving as an active member of Holly Springs Baptist Church.  He serves as a deacon, teaches Sunday School on occasion, assists with the youth group and sings in the choir and the praise ensemble. 

Sloan graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Financial Management. He is employed as the general manager of Village Greens Golf Club in Gramling, S.C. and River Falls Plantation in Duncan, S.C. He and his wife, Kim, live in Holly Springs and have two children.

Officers elected to lead the association’s board of directors for a one-year term are as follows: 

  • President, Wesley Hightower, Aiken County Schools
  • President-elect, Tony Folk, Dorchester School District Four
  • Vice President, Chuck Saylors, Greenville County Schools
  • Treasurer, Cheryl Burgess, Lexington School District Three
  • Secretary, Jamie Devine, Richland One School District
In addition to Sloan, others elected to serve a four-year term on the 23-member board of directors as regional directors are:

  • Region 1, Gail Hughes, Dorchester Two
  • Region 5, Kim Johnson, Clarendon School District Two
  • Region 9, Daniel Martin, Lexington School District Four
  • Region 13, Michele Branning, Fort Mill Schools
  • Region 15, Lisa Wells, Greenville County Schools
