High School

Kevin Horton is in his twelfth year with Spartanburg School District 1.  He serves as the Director of Bands at Chapman High School.  Mr. Horton also serves as the Awards Chairman on the Executive Board of the SCBDA.  Before coming to District 1, he served as band director at Carver Junior High School (4 years) and Spartanburg High School (5 years) in District 7.  Bands under his direction consistently receive superior ratings, including 7 consecutive years of straight superior ratings at Concert Performance Assessment.  In addition, Mr. Horton's bands have received the SCBDA Outstanding Performance Award thirteen times.  As a performer, Mr. Horton has played with the USC Symphony Orchestra, the Left Bank Jazz Ensemble, Converse Wind Ensemble, Sandlapper Singers, Limestone College, local Columbia rock/funk bands, the Upstate Saxophone Quartet (founding member), and many churches across the upstate.  Mr. Horton studied saxophone with Dr. Cliff Leaman and Dr. Roger Pemberton, and is an active woodwind coach and local performer.  Mr. Horton is a graduate of Boiling Springs High School and received his Bachelor of Music Education degree and Master of Education degree from the University of South Carolina.  He attended the SC Governors School for the Arts and Humanities and was the saxophone instructor for the USC Preparatory Program.  He is a member of Delta Omicron, NAfME, SCMEA, IAJE, SCBDA, North America Saxophone Alliance, the D’Addario Education Collective, the National Corvette Museum, and the NYSCA.  Mr. Horton and his wife Jessica have two sons, Alex (saxophone/drum major) and Adam (piano/percussion).
Jessica Wofford, a National Board Certified Teacher, is currently in her eleventh year as the band director at Holly Springs-Motlow Elementary and Mabry Middle School.  Mrs. Wofford is on the Executive Board for the South Carolina Band Directors Association serving as the All State Chairperson. She was formerly the Assistant Director of Bands at James F. Byrnes High School and the Director of Bands at Berry Shoals Intermediate School, where she was named “Teacher of the Year” for the 2008-2009 school year. Mrs. Wofford is from Goose Creek, SC and is a graduate of Stratford High School. Mrs. Wofford received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Furman University in 2003 and she received a Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance from the University of South Carolina in 2005. Mrs. Wofford is an active clarinetist and has performed with the Spartanburg Philharmonic, Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Converse College Wind Ensemble, Limestone College Wind Ensemble, and the Palmetto Concert Band. Mrs. Wofford is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI), NAfME, SCMEA, SCBDA, ICA, WKA, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Phi Eta Sigma. Mrs. Wofford and her husband live in Greer, SC with their sons, Matthew and Weeks, and their dog, Dixie.
Nathan Erps is in his fourth year as a full time teacher. He is currently the band director at New Prospect Elementary, Inman Intermediate School, and the assistant director at Chapman High School. Prior to coming to Spartanburg District 1, Mr. Erps spent a year as a substitute in Spartanburg District 7; normally working with music classrooms spanning from elementary general music to high school band and orchestra. He has also spent several years as a marching band technician for various schools.  Mr. Erps is from Spartanburg, South Carolina and graduated from Spartanburg High School. He then went on to Furman University to earn his Bachelors in Music Education and has plans to obtain his Masters degree in the near future. Mr. Erps is a percussionist by trade and has had the pleasure of performing with multiple ensembles including the Converse Wind Ensemble, Furman Wind Ensemble and the Boston Pops Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Mr. Erps lives in Spartanburg, S.C where he enjoys spending time with his family and getting lunch with his grandmother.
