What is Reading Recovery?

Reading Recovery is a research-based, short-term intervention of one-to-one teaching for at risk first graders that was developed by Dr. Marie Clay. The students selected to participate in this program are taught individually for 30 minutes each day ranging from 12 to 20 weeks. Each lesson is created specifically for that child by a highly trained Reading Recovery teacher. The lessons begin with the strengths of the child and all learning links to these strengths. This instruction is in addition to the instruction the child receives in their classroom. Throughout the school year, Reading Recovery teachers serve an average of 8-10 Reading Recovery Students 1 to 1 and an average of 45 students are served through literacy small groups.

As soon as students can read and write at grade level or their 20 weeks are completed, students’ lessons are discontinued and new students are selected to receive individual instruction. Reading Recovery is offered in all of the elementary schools in Spartanburg County School District 1.

The goal of Reading Recovery is to dramatically reduce the number of first-grade students who have extreme difficulty learning to read and write and to reduce the cost of these learners to educational systems.
