New safety procedures

In an effort to enhance safety and security measures at events, Spartanburg School District One announced today the implementation of a clear bag policy and a new rule prohibiting unaccompanied minors from attending high school athletic events, effective from August 1, 2023.

The decision to enforce these policies comes as part of the district's ongoing commitment to creating a safe and secure environment for students, staff, and attendees during events held within the district.

Clear Bag Policy

Starting August 1, 2023, all individuals attending after-school events (athletic events, performing arts events, etc.) held at a Spartanburg One venue will be expected to comply with the Clear Bag Guidelines and Procedures.

This policy restricts the types of bags that can be brought into the event venues. Only one clear bag made of plastic, vinyl, or PVC that does not exceed 12 inches X 6 inches X 12 inches in size will be allowed per attendee.

Parents, students, and spectators are encouraged to plan ahead and familiarize themselves with the new policy to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience when attending events.  Prohibited bags include backpacks, purses, diaper bags, and any bag larger than the specified clear bag size.  Additional clothing, blankets, etc. are permitted if carried loosely or in an approved clear bag.

No Unaccompanied Minors Rule

In conjunction with the clear bag policy, Spartanburg School District One is also introducing a new rule that will prohibit unaccompanied minors from attending high school athletic events. All attendees in the 8th grade or below must be accompanied by a responsible adult or parent.  High school students with proper identification will continue to be granted access to the event. Parents or guardians of non-high school kids may not “drop off” their child at a high school athletic event or leave that child unattended.

This decision was made to enhance the safety and supervision of young attendees during high school athletic events. By requiring minors to be accompanied by adults, the district aims to create a more secure and family-friendly environment for everyone present.

The district urges parents, guardians, and community members to support these safety measures and adhere to the policies when attending events hosted by Spartanburg School District One. With everyone's cooperation, the district can continue to foster a positive and secure atmosphere for its students, staff,  and the community as a whole.
