The South Carolina Department of Education recently released the 2024–2025 South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Assessments (SC READY) results for students in grades 3–8, End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) results for high school subjects, and Career Ready Assessment results for 11th and 12th graders. The latest assessment data shows that Spartanburg School District One students exceeded the state average in 10 of the 12 SC READY tested categories in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, while middle and high school students also outperformed the state in key EOCEP subjects and on the Career Ready exam.
“Our results this year show strong growth in nearly every tested grade level,” said Superintendent Dr. Mark Smith. “Districtwide, we grew 8% in ELA and continued to make gains in mathematics. In 10 out of 12 areas, our students scored above the state average, and in six areas, we saw double-digit gains from last year. These numbers reflect the commitment of our teachers and the hard work of our students. We are proud of the progress and remain focused on continuous improvement.”
Highlights from the 2024–2025 data include:
Districtwide growth: Spartanburg One grew 8% overall in English Language Arts and showed continued improvement in mathematics compared to 2023–2024 results.
Significant gains in ELA: Third grade ELA jumped from 54.1% to 68.5% (+14.4), seventh grade ELA rose from 57.9% to 67.5% (+9.6), and eighth grade ELA increased from 48.7% to 61.2% (+12.5).
Math progress: Students outperformed the state in five of six math categories, including standout results in third grade math (66.1% vs. 56.3%) and fifth grade math (55.9% vs. 48.1%).
Middle school strength: Sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students exceeded the state in both ELA and math.
EOCEP success: Spartanburg One students exceeded the state average in English II, Biology I, and U.S. History, continuing the district’s strong performance in core high school subject areas.
Career Ready results: Nearly 80% of 11th and 12th grade students earned a workforce readiness credential on the South Carolina Career Ready Assessment, surpassing the state average of 69%.
Closing gaps: Only two categories—fourth grade math and fourth grade ELA—were slightly below the state average, but both still showed improvement over last year.
“These results are more than percentages on a chart—they are proof that our students can rise to meet challenges and that our staff’s efforts are making a real difference,” Dr. Smith added.
Spartanburg One remains committed to its mission of providing a quality, student-centered education and will continue to build on this success in the years ahead.
